The City of Burnsville has two fire stations that are strategically located to provide a quick response in times of need. The stations, staffed 24 hours a day by professional firefighters and paramedics, also serve as a resource for the surrounding neighborhood and community.

After 13 years as a combined Public Safety Department with police, the Burnsville Fire Department was created on Nov. 29, 1981 with 23 career firefighters. On Sept. 4, 1984, the department hired seven paramedics and started providing Advanced Life Support ambulance service to the community. Burnsville's is one of few departments in the state the serves as full time fire and emergency medical services (EMS) responders for its city.
Minnesota Statue 471.701 requires that a city or county with a population of more than 15,000 must annually notify its residents of the positions and base salaries of its three highest paid employees.
