Licensing & Code Enforcement
What We Do
Burnsville’s Licensing & Code Enforcement staff work with residents to help ensure clean, safe and healthy neighborhoods in Burnsville. This is accomplished by inspecting for and enforcing basic housing and property maintenance codes that affect the quality of life for both renters and private property owners. By working with residents to remedy things that have the potential to be unsafe, unsanitary or infringe on the rights of others, the City hopes to maintain property values and assure the preservation of the City’s existing housing supply.

Property Maintenance
Beginning in the Spring of 2013, Burnsville Property Maintenance Inspectors will take a more proactive approach to property maintenance issues in the city. Inspectors will begin periodically canvassing neighborhoods to help identify code violations that can prove to be unsafe, unsanitary or detrimental to the neighborhood. It is then the goal of inspectors to work with residents to bring any property maintenance issues into compliance with State and City code.

Rental Licensing
The City requires rental properties be licensed to help ensure owners, operators and managers are taking reasonable steps to provide a safe, secure and sanitary environment for tenants and neighboring residents. Licenses are only issued after an initial inspection of the property has taken place – and can be withheld if a property does not meet minimum health, safety and building codes. Rental properties will also be inspected periodically to ensure that the buildings are maintained properly.
