Citizens Academy

The Burnsville Police Department offers a Citizens Academy to members of the community for an inside look into the Burnsville Police Department’s operations. The academy consists of various hands-on classes taught over a nine week period to familiarize the class participants with police work and how the community can help prevent crime through a partnership with the Police Department.

The Department is now taking applications for the Fall 2010 Class:  [Download Application]

Class Topics:
• Tour of the police department and Dakota County Communication Center
• History of the police department
• Functions of patrol, investigations, emergency action group, physical evidence team, domestic
abuse response team, negotiators, bike patrol, traffic & K-9 units
• Review of typical calls for service
• DWI demonstration
• Traffic stops
• Officer survival, use of force, shooting range

The academy classes will be taught by Burnsville Police Officers. We ask that you make a commitment to attend each session. After the successful completion of this program, citizens will be given an opportunity to ride-along with a Burnsville Police Officer for four hours during his or her shift.
