2016 Officer of the Year
Maksim G. Yakovlev
Sergeant Maksim G. Yakovlev has been a valued member of the Burnsville Police Department since 1999. Over the last 17 years, he has excelled in multiple roles within the department as a community service officer, patrol officer, use of force instructor, EAG tactical team member, field training officer, investigator and now sergeant.

A strong work ethic, positive attitude, exceptional leadership skills and the respect he has for and from his peers are all factors that contributed to Sergeant Yakovlev being named Burnsville’s 2016 Officer of the Year.

Sergeant Yakovlev has a proven track record of providing exceptional service and dedication to the City of Burnsville, its residents and businesses. He has developed strong partnerships with the community, which are solidified by treating people with respect, honesty, integrity and dignity.

In his nearly two decades with the Burnsville Police Department, Sergeant Yakovlev has always sought out new information and skills – and knows that every day is a new opportunity to learn.

He is also committed to passing his knowledge on to others. As a certified “Master Instructor” with the State of Minnesota, Sergeant Yakovlev is a highly sought-after tactical and use-of-force instructor in the region.

He also teaches at Rasmussen College in the Twin Cities, which allows him to share his knowledge with the next generation of police officers. His passion for teaching is sincere, and he is always on the lookout for the best and brightest students in hopes of recruiting them to the Burnsville Police Department.

In March 2016, Sergeant Yakovlev was one of several officers involved in an officer-involved shooting – the first in Burnsville in 35 years. Although faced with an extremely dangerous situation and a tragic outcome, he remained calm with his officers on scene, evaluated several options, provided clear information and direction, and constantly checked on his officers to make sure they were okay.

In May 2016, Sergeant Yakovlev and his team of patrol officers responded to another critical incident involving gun violence. The suspect in this case fled from the scene and attempted to hide underneath a vehicle. Thanks to the work of the officers and Sergeant Yakovlev’s sound leadership, the suspect was taken into custody without incident. This is just another example of his leadership, coordination and sound tactics.

Sergeant Yakovlev’s devotion to law enforcement serves the department well by adhering to the high standards and core values of Honor, Integrity, Courage, Excellence and Knowledge.

For these reasons the Burnsville Police Department is proud to announce Burnsville Police Sergeant Maksim G. Yakovlev as Burnsville’s 2016 Police Officer of the Year.
