Derek R. Schutz
In his 5½ years of service with the Burnsville Police Department, Officer Derek R. Schutz has been a solid employee since the day he was hired and has performed to an unusually high standard in his law enforcement career. Serving in the capacities of Patrol Officer, Use of Force Instructor, Gang Officer, Emergency Action Group-Tactical Team Member and Street Crimes Officer, Derek is highly respected among his peers and has set himself apart from others through his consistent, tenacious work ethic and leadership skills.

Distinguished as Burnsville’s 2011 Officer of the Year, Officer Schutz has a proven track record of exceptional service and dedication to the department and citizens of Burnsville. Whether aggressively patrolling the streets or responding to an EAG Tactical Team callout, Officer Schutz is a consummate professional who resolves the issue at hand and looks for the long-term solution to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Through his constant interaction within the community, Officer Schutz has developed strong partnerships that are solidified by treating people with respect and dignity. His strong work ethic and passion to develop relationships in the community are displayed daily as a Street Crimes Officer, and his honesty and integrity is above reproach.

Simply speaking, Officer Schutz loves his job and as a result of his special assignment as a Street Crimes Officer he has always been very pro-active in his efforts to fight crime in Burnsville. Through his self-initiated contacts, statistics confirm that Derek is one of the most active officers in arrests numbers. His intelligence gathering and ability to connect the dots is truly impressive. Derek leads by example with his positive influence, high-level of enthusiasm and professionalism for the job at hand.

The key responsibilities of the two Street Crimes Officers are to focus on serious crime issues, hot spots and emerging trends; provide a flexible, proactive response; provide concentrated enforcement initiatives; facilitate community education and awareness events; and work with other City departments on problem-solving initiatives. Derek has excelled in all of these areas. One of his many strengths is his ability to develop strong relationships, both internally and externally, to resolve a number of issues throughout the community. In a recent annual evaluation conducted by Sergeant Dan Athmann, Derek’s performance was summed up as follows:

“Derek takes a very proactive approach to the job and puts together comprehensive reports. Derek’s activity level each day is very high and the types of cases (drugs, weapons, warrant, vice) and arrests made are significant. Derek is a role model for team spirit and teamwork. It does not matter who asks for help, whether internal or external partners, Derek will do whatever it takes.”

Officer Schutz’s devotion to law enforcement and the community he serves are well in keeping with the highest standards of this department. Through his efforts, many victims have been protected from further violence and many criminals have been taken off the streets. His tenacious work ethic and willingness to get involved have been a tremendous influence on those he works with. Congratulations, Derek, for being selected as Burnsville Police Department’s 2011 Officer of the Year!
