Smoke Detectors

Roughly 80 percent of fire-related deaths in the home occur in houses that either do not have a smoke alarm, or do not have one that is working properly. In Minnesota, every home is required to have at least one smoke alarm per level. In new construction, a smoke alarm must be installed in each bedroom, and in a centrally located point in the hallways connecting bedrooms. In new construction, smoke alarms are also required to be interconnected.

It is important that you test your smoke alarms monthly, and change the batteries twice a year -- (The “Change your Clock-Change your Battery” method can be useful to help you remember.)
