When should I call 9-1-1?
Any time you need a Police, Fire or Medical response you should dial 9-1-1. The dispatcher will ask you where your emergency is and what is happening. Please remain calm when talking to the dispatcher. Remember … when calling 9-1-1 it is very important to stay on the phone, even if 9-1-1 was dialed in error. The dispatcher is required to verify where the call is coming from and if an emergency exists. If you hang up, a police officer will be sent to the location the 9-1-1 computer provides.

What number do I call for a non-emergency situation?
Call 9-1-1 for all non-emergencies. Dispatchers at the Dakota Communications Center will route callers to the appropriate person to speak with. Non-emergencies include abandoned cars, lost or found property, non-injury accidents, vandalism, and other crimes not in progress.

What are the directions to the Burnsville Police Department?
We are located at 100 Civic Center Parkway, Burnsville, Minnesota 55337. Civic Center Parkway is located on the east side of Nicollet Avenue, north of McAndrews Road and south of the Burnsville Parkway.

What are the lobby hours?
The police reception desk is open between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. A lobby phone is available that may be used to contact the Communications Center (dispatcher) to request police assistance after normal business hours, on weekends and during holidays.

How can Burnsville help me if I don’t speak English or if I am speech impaired?
Calls may be transferred to a translator. Dispatchers are also able to handle calls directly from the TTY.

How may I get a copy of a police or accident report?
If you would like to verify that a report is ready for release, or if you are eligible to obtain a copy, please call 952-895-4600 (between 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday through Friday) and ask for the Records Unit. There is a .25 per sheet fee for reports.

How do I obtain a Letter of Clearance (Good Conduct)?
These letters are often required for immigration, citizenship, adoption, visas, employment and various other reasons. Please phone the police department at 952-895-4600 to provide information for the records search and coordinate a date and time to pick up the completed letter. Proof of identification must be provided to release the completed letter of clearance. The fee for this service is $30.

Do you provide fingerprinting services?
Yes - Fingerprinting is available Tuesdays from noon-1pm and 6pm-7pm. The cost is $30 per person. Cash or Check.

How do I get a Solicitor’s Permit?
Applications for solicitor’s permits may be obtained from the police receptionist. Proof of identification must be provided at the time the completed application is turned in. The fee for this service is $50. Approved permits will be issued in two to three business days.

How may I obtain a Restraining/Harassment Order or Order for Protection?
These documents are issued by the district court. Applications may be obtained from the Dakota County District Court locations in Apple Valley or Hastings, or visit their website:

How do I check for sexual offenders in my neighborhood?

Who do I call about barking dogs or dogs running loose in my neighborhood?
Noise complaints may be reported to 9-1-1. Please phone Burnsville Animal Control at American Boarding Kennels at 952-894-3647 for assistance with stray animals or other animal-related questions.

How may I compliment an officer or employee?
The best way is to send an email, letter or card to the Chief of Police, 100 Civic Center Parkway, Burnsville, MN 55337 or use the link below. Tell us the name of the employee and a summary of how the employee was helpful to you. This recognition will be placed in their personnel file and shared with the employee’s immediate supervisor.

How do I make a complaint against an officer or employee?
The police department accepts complaints from any source. If you have a complaint or policy question, you may call on on-duty watch commander at 952-895-4620. If you wish to make a formal complaint, you will be asked to fill out a complaint form and advisory waiver. The watch commander will explain the process to you.

What are the rules for infant and child restraint/booster seats?
If a vehicle has a passenger airbag, it is essential for children 12 years of age and under to sit in the back seat, which is considered to be the safest location in vehicles.

How do I get a Permit to Purchase a Handgun?
Burnsville residents may pick up an application form at the police department. A copy of the applicant’s Minnesota driver’s license or Minnesota identification card must accompany the completed form. There is no fee for this permit.
