About Citizens Academy

Nine-week course that allows community members to get a “behind-the-scenes” look at police work and learn how they can help prevent crime. Apply early as the academy fills quickly. Please note that a submitted application does not guarantee a spot.

Adults ages 18+ who live or work in Burnsville

When:     
Thursdays, Oct. 10 – Dec. 12 • 6 – 9 p.m.
Last Oct.class held on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
No class on Thursday, Nov. 28

Where:   
Burnsville City Hall, 100 Civic Center Parkway

Cost:      
FREE (must pass a background check)

Class Topics

  • History of and tour the police department
  • Review common police calls/ laws of arrest/ handcuffing procedures
  • Functions of patrol, investigations, SWAT, physical evidence team, domestic abuse response team, negotiators, bike patrol traffic and K-9 units
  • Traffic stops/DWI demonstration
  • Officer survival, use of force
  • Student involved scenarios, a Taser demonstration and shooting in an indoor range

Participants are asked to make a commitment to attend each session.
